After decades of knowing Rennie Harris, I’m thrilled to step on the Joyce stage in his show American Street Dancer. We practiced this hip-hop form long before studios taught it — a culture the world now absorbs in countless ways: sometimes without understanding or appreciating it, sometimes co-opting it while refusing to acknowledge its roots and legacy.
I’m excited to share Urbantu — my Urban + Bantu threadscaping modality, rooted in hip-hop, blending movement with beatboxing and throat singing. This is my movement aesthetic, history, a celebration of a culture that continues to evolve while staying rooted in its origins.
